National Center for Social Studies and Research Participates in the WAPOR 2022 International Conference
Date
The National Center for Social Studies and Research participated in the 75th World Association for Public Opinion Research Conference (WAPOR 75th), held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 10 to 15 November, as part of its commitment to active participation in international forums and its strategic objective of communication and coordination with relevant entities. The Center presented two scientific papers. The first, delivered by Center adviser Keren Killard, was entitled "A Rapid Review of Barriers and Enablers to Sports Participation Among Saudi Women." She highlighted Saudi Vision 2030 goals for healthier lifestyles, including increasing regular weekly exercise among men and women to 40% by 2030, and noted progress in women's participation in physical activity from 7% in 2015 to 21% in 2021. The rapid review highlighted individual, social, economic, cultural and environmental barriers facing Saudi women and presented insights for policymakers developing initiatives to increase participation, including raising awareness of the benefits of exercise, improving access to sports facilities through transport and childcare options, reducing costs, ensuring culturally appropriate facilities and providing female sports role models. She also explained that rapid reviews are useful tools for identifying key research findings on current social issues within a short period to support policy development.
The second paper was presented by Dr. Ghinaa Al-Juhani, Head of the Studies and Research Unit, under the title "Focus Groups: Manifestations of Change in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia." It discussed Saudi Vision 2030, the aspirations of young people aged 21-35, and their views on cultural, economic and social transformation and the Kingdom's ambition to become a vibrant society. The paper addressed the methodological basis for selecting focus groups, best practices, potential interview and sampling challenges, and the importance of qualitative research in enriching knowledge and understanding young people's views of change in Saudi Arabia. Results showed awareness of the Kingdom's ambitious Vision and major projects such as NEOM and The Line. Participants expressed support for change and its role in diversifying income, reducing dependence on oil revenues, advancing education and youth skills, expanding employment opportunities, strengthening digital transactions, simplifying government procedures and improving health. They also noted efforts to support women through legislation and to showcase Saudi Arabia's tourism, entertainment and culture to the world.
